Julia's Role In 1984:
Unlike Winston, Julia focuses more on her own survival and selfish desires rather than destroying the party. She highlights the human characteristics that Winston does not. Whereas Winston viewed their intimate relations as part of his rebellion to the party, Julia viewed their relationship simply as a means to satisfy her own sexual desires. Julia is more realistic and optimistic as she defies the party, and she better understands the extent of the Party’s power. Winston holds more hope for a complete overthrow of the Party. However, together their love forms the strongest opposition to the Party, and it validates Winston’s belief that the Party cannot infiltrate their most intimate thoughts. Julia reinforces his hope, and their combined opposition eventually leads to their capture when they act as a normal couple and let their guard down.
